Stay Competitive With A Mobile DSD Solution

Molson Canada rolls out a $2.2 million wireless mobile direct store delivery (DSD) solution with help from a VAR.

In commodity-based markets such as beverage distribution, one of the best ways for manufacturers/distributors to differentiate themselves is with the use of technology. More often than not, wireless mobile computing solutions are top choices because they
address the needs of drivers who are charged with delivering massive amounts of product in a timely and accurate manner. Molson Canada is no exception to that rule. The beer manufacturer/distributor has several large rivals and doesn’t want any of them to get a
technological edge. When Molson Canada wanted to renew its invoicing tools in its DSD operation in the Province of Quebec, it turned to systems integrator Omniciel for assistance. Omniciel’s experience providing system design, installation, and ongoing support with beer manufacturers Labatts and Sleemans made it the right choice for the job.

Unlike so many DSD solutions that typically entail using paper order slips and multipart invoices, the integrator had a much more automated solution. Omniciel provided an integrated solution that included DAP CE3240 handheld computers, Omniciel Route Partner and Route Manager software, and O’Neil 4T 4-inch thermal printers with Bluetooth, which are Windows-compatible devices that activate when they receive a data signal and hibernate when not in use. “With only two companies providing DSD solutions in Montreal, one in the maritimes, and another in Ontario, you get to know the competitors and have to continually assess their capabilities and systems,” says Pierre Berthiaume, distribution principal director at Molson Canada. “Omniciel converted 32 delivery sites and trained 540 employees in less than six weeks, plus they provided us with a software maintenance agreement that allows our drivers to call Omniciel’s toll-free line 24 hours a day for program support.” According to Berthiaume, the overall project cost $2.2 million (Canadian).
